GSW Fine Arts Building Ribbon Cutting Set for Sept. 25th
Friday, September 18th, 2015
The Fine Arts Building at Georgia Southwestern State University received much-needed renovation over the summer, and a special ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 25 at 10:45 a.m. to commemorate the improvements. The Fine Arts Building is located on the south end of campus adjacent to the James Earl Carter Library and the Business, History and Political Science Building.
The public is invited to attend this event.
The renovation project included the installation of a massive new green screen in the experimental theater (reportedly the second largest in Georgia), a new photography lab, enhanced prop production space, a new lift system for curtains and scenic backdrops, additional outdoor space for painting and drawing classes, three dimensional backdrop technology and improvements in building infrastructure. The project totaled roughly $2.5 million and was financed through the legislature’s minor capital projects fund.
“The renovations represent an investment in our fine arts programs at Georgia Southwestern and the University's ongoing commitment to meet the needs of our students so that they may serve active roles in the rapidly evolving fine arts and film industries in the State of Georgia,” said GSW Interim President Charles Patterson. “This funding demonstrates the support by our local delegation and state representatives in providing the infrastructure and capabilities necessary to support our students and to be competitive on a national stage.”
Originally constructed in 1982, the Fine Arts Building is home to the Department of Visual Arts and the Department of Theater, Communication and Media Arts. The building includes space for painting, print making, drawing, theatrical performance, sculpting for ceramics and metal, glass blowing, wood working, photography and digital artwork. It also houses a 270-seat theater and an art gallery.
Following the ceremony, tours will be given featuring demonstrations in drawing, glass blowing, wood working, photography and in the experimental theater using the green screen.
