Staff Report From Albany CEO

Monday, September 28th, 2015

Prepare for a glorious night of music, dancing, and grand entertainment Oct. 23 as Albany State University salutes the ASU Marching Band at the “Atlanta Salutes Georgia’s Peach in the Roses” presidential gala at the downtown Hyatt Regency.

Co-hosted by television actress and singer, JoMarie Payton, and Glenda Hatchett, Atlanta attorney and star of the former “Judge Hatchett” television show, the formal  affair is a benefit for the “Rams in the Roses and Beyond” campaign for the ASU marching band, which has received a historic invitation to the 2016 Tournament of Parade in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 1.

“The ASU Marching Band is a real treasure, and we want to make every effort to send our exceptional scholars and musicians to this once-in-a-lifetime event,” said ASU interim President Arthur Dunning. “We are reaching out – this time while in Atlanta for a weekend football contest -- to our alumni and supporters, to help us celebrate this momentous occasion.”

The ASU Marching Band is the only band from the Southeast and the only Georgia band selected to participate in the New Year’s Day parade. Proceeds from the gala will be used for the band’s accommodations, entertainment, logistics and travel to Pasadena, and for ASU academic and professional experiences long after the parade.

The gala will feature performances by the university’s jazz ensemble, as well as, appearances from ASU Band Director, Michael Decuir, and other special guests. A silent auction, VIP reception and more can be expected, gala organizers said. The night begins at 6 p.m. with a silent auction highlighting creations by gifted artists from around the region; festivities continue with a special 7 p.m. reception.

“This will undoubtedly be a night to remember,” said Chanta Haywood, vice president of Institutional Advancement and executive director of the ASU Foundation. “This is an opportunity for alumni, supporters, and friends to celebrate our outstanding marching band.”
