Regional IT Group, City of Albany Consider Future
Monday, August 31st, 2015
City Manager Sharon Subadan’s simple statement at the Albany City Commission’s July 21 work meeting sent shock waves in a far-reaching path that carried through seven small Southwest Georgia communities, reverberated under the Gold Dome in Atlanta, and struck squarely in the seats of power at the nation’s capital.
“I’m unable to recommend to you that we move forward with this agreement as it stands,” Subadan, in her position just over a month, told the Albany City Commission that Tuesday morning. The focus of her comment: the South Georgia Regional Information Technology Authority broadband ring that would bring high-speed Internet service to citizens in Baker, Calhoun, Early, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole and Terrell counties, communities that in 2015 were still relying on dial-up Internet service.
