ASU to Welcome New Students

The Albany State University campus is filled with excitement as the campus community anticipates the Class of 2019 for New Student Orientation and Welcome Weekend. The ASU Housing and Residence Life team, along with faculty and staff members are welcoming the newest Rams to campus Wednesday, Aug. 12, for New Student Orientation. Welcome Weekend for freshmen starts Thursday, Aug.13, and ends Sunday, Aug. 16.
Freshman students participating in the August orientation will move-in 7 a.m. Wednesday. New Student Orientation general assemblies, beginning with the president’s welcome at 9 a.m., in HPER Gymnasium, will follow.
Freshman students who participated in both the June and July orientation groups will move-in at 10 a.m. Thursday, then join their peers for the welcome weekend opening session at 1 p.m. in HPER Gym. Welcome weekend activities include a series of concurrent sessions with the department of Housing and Residence Life, open discussions with peer leaders, freshman class elections, a comedy show and a hypnotist performance by Chris Jones, featured on this season of “Americas Got Talent.”
At 4 p.m. Friday, in the HPER Gymnasium, the university will host Freshman Convocation Ceremony to officially signify the students’ transition from high school to college. The keynote speaker for the ceremony is Florida attorney and former ASU SGA President (2001-2003), Tremaine Reese, MPA, Esq.
Classes begin Monday, Aug. 17.
WHAT:
The new student orientation program is designed to introduce incoming students to the university’s academic resources and opportunities that will help students navigate the rigors of the college classroom.
The welcome weekend is designed to give new students an opportunity get to know their peers, learn about university resources, and adjust to campus life prior to classes starting.
WHO:
New students attending ASU this fall are invited to participate in the new student orientation program and welcome weekend activities. University administrators, student services officials, Student Government Association representatives and orientation volunteers will offer insight to prepare students for their successful transition from high school to ASU.
