Darton State College’s Servant Leadership Program teamed up with The Home Depot to renovate and plant the DSC Community Garden in celebration of the 45^th Annual Earth Day on April 22, 2015. 

“The purpose of our Earth Day event was not only to revive the DSC garden, but it was also the perfect day to announce our partnership with The Home Depot. We have many other upcoming projects that we will be partnering with the Home Depot on,” said Dr. Kelsey Woodard, director of service-learning and civic engagement. 

Darton students along with 12 Home Depot employees spent the afternoon tearing down old planter boxes, rebuilding new ones, and planting tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupe, watermelon, and peppers. The garden will be used to service communities and community members in need within the Albany area. 

Dr. Woodard hopes the garden will be used as a way to encourage volunteerism and community bonding. “We are currently working on a website for the community garden, which will include schedules for group water/weeding days that students and/or community groups will be able to sign-up and volunteer.”
