The 33^rd physician in the nation to earn board-certification in complex general oncology surgery is Phoebe Putney Health System’s surgical oncologist Sanjay Munireddy, MD.

Established in 2011 by the American Board of Surgery, the certificate in complex general surgical oncology recognizes physicians who have previously achieved certification in general surgery and who have advanced training in the surgical treatment and multidisciplinary care of rare or uncommon cancers as well as complex presentations.

“While every cancer patient’s situation is different, there are cancers that are more common,” said Robert Krywicki, chair of oncology at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. “Dr. Munireddy’s latest board-certification recognizes his expertise in the diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment of patients with rare, complex and recurrent cancers. 

The American Board of Surgery defines surgeons certified in this specialty as trained to:

• interact with other oncologic specialists as part of the necessary interdisciplinary collaboration needed to treat cancer patients;
• participate in outreach community activities in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation; and
• assume a productive role in cancer research and lead cancer studies.

“It takes a team of specialists to provide high quality care for our patients,” Dr. Krysicki said. “We are proud to have Dr. Munireddy on our team.” 

When Dr. Munireddy joined the Phoebe team in September 2013, he brought a high level of expertise in surgical oncology including breast conserving surgery and laparoscopic surgical techniques for colon, liver and pancreatic cancers.
