With the deepening of the Port of Savannah under way, Albany Rotary Club members learned why the port is so important to the state’s economy during a presentation at the club’s regular meeting Thursday from Leo Beckmann of the Georgia Ports Authority.
Beckmann said the Ports Authority is unique within the state because it receives no operational funding yet it generates a considerable amount of economic impact for the state.
“We are a unique animal within the state,” said Beckmann. “We don’t receive any operational funds from the state of Georgia, so when you look at the Georgia budget, there is no Georgia Ports Authority within that budget.”
