The Albany State University Office of Global Programs and the Dougherty County School System are hosting the 2014 International Education Week. This year’s theme is “Global Connectivity: One World One Humanity.” The week-long tribute to international education begins Saturday, Nov. 1 and runs through Wednesday, Nov. 5. 

The community is invited to the Global and Cultural Explosion Fair beginning at 9 a.m., Nov. 1 at Wiley Hall located on the ASU campus.  The fair features the Parade of Flags, a City of Albany Proclamation, a Cultural Food Fest, the International Fashion Show and the Field Day FIFA Shootout.

Currently, ASU students, faculty and staff represent over 52 countries. “A college education is incomplete without international education, which embodies global and intercultural competence. The 21^st century college graduates are expected to have global knowledge and skills required for survival as global citizens,” said Dr. Nneka Nora Osakwe, director of ASU Global Programs.

Students from the DCSS English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program, International Studies Elementary Charter, Lake Park Elementary, Sherwood Acres Elementary, Morningside Elementary, Turner Elementary, Radium Springs Elementary, Radium Springs Middle Magnet, Lincoln Elementary, and Albany High will participate in the postcard competition, fashion show and parade.

“On behalf of the Dougherty County School System’s ESOL/Migrant Department, International Studies Elementary Charter School, and supervisory council, we are delighted to collaborate with ASU this year to promote internationalism, said Anedith Clark, DCSS International Studies Elementary Charter School ESOL teacher. “It is a goal of ours to educate the community on the importance and benefits of teaching students to become global students through academics,” she added.

The ESOL/Migrant Department teaches skills to help English learners succeed socially and academically.  “We hope to use International Education Week as the trailblazer to open the path to a more meaningful relationship with the University,” added Clark.

ESOL teachers and ESOL Parent Committee members from the Dougherty County School System will showcase international artifacts, and hold a migrant program informational at the Cultural Explosion.
