The Albany State University Department of Nursing Undergraduate and Graduate programs were recently granted continued accreditation through the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), formally the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).  

“The reaffirmation of the nursing programs allows ASU to continue to offer a quality nursing education program that meets the needs of the students and the healthcare industry,” said nursing department chair and associate professor, Dr. Cathy H. Williams. Williams is also the department’s Fuller E. Callaway Endowed Chair.

I am proud of the nursing department’s accomplishment in being granted continued accreditation,” said Dr. Joyce Johnson, dean of the ASU College of Sciences and Health Professions. “Dr. Cathy Williams and her faculty, staff and students are to be commended for presenting our stellar nursing program to the accreditation reviewers.” 

During the review, the visiting team from the accreditation board noted the counseling relationships between nursing students and faculty.

“Overall, the students indicated that the faculty are understanding, culturally sensitive, accessible, approachable and available when needed,” the report stated. In addition, the document referenced as strengths the student living/learning communities and nursing faculty and student mentoring programs.

The nursing program has had NLNAC accreditation for over 30 years, since 1983.  The continued accreditation was granted with the condition that the program submits a follow-up report in two years.

Upon acceptance of the follow-up report by the board of commissioners, the next evaluation visit will be scheduled for fall 2021.
