When Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard learned in late January that she had been nominated for a Georgia Minority Business Award as Mayor of the Year, she didn’t think a whole lot about it.

But when Hubbard recently discovered she’d won the award and then saw the other 11 honorees who will be recognized March 27, she realized this was a “pretty big deal.”

“I didn’t run for the mayor’s office to make this about me, so I’ve never thought that much about awards and any kind of personal recognition,” Hubbard said. “But when I found out I’d won the Georgia Minority Business Award and saw the others who’d won awards, I went ‘Whoa! This is some pretty good company.’

“When the lady at Atlanta Business Journal (which co-sponsors the awards) called to tell me that I’d won, I said, ‘This is a huge surprise because I don’t do this for personal attention.’ She said, ‘We’ve been watching you and keeping up with what’s going on down in Albany, and one of the main reasons you were selected to receive the award is that you’re not out for personal gain.’
