Telling a crowd of some 100 supporters, who braved cool and rainy weather to be on hand, that he was “compelled” to seek office, Christopher Cohilas formally announced his candidacy for the Dougherty County Commission’s chairmanship Tuesday.

“People have asked me why I decided to make this commitment,” Cohilas said in brief remarks. “I tell them I was compelled to run for office the same way I was compelled to leave a successful law firm in Atlanta to take a job as a prosecutor in Dougherty County. I’m compelled the same way I was compelled to start and raise a family in this community.

“I believe that government has to speak for the people, and I will speak for every person in Dougherty County, from East Albany to South Albany to Doublegate. Every person in this community deserves a government that’s completely accessible to them. I promise the people of Dougherty County that they can count on me to shoot straight, that I will always be honest and my door will always be open.”

Amy Boney, who worked with Cohilas at the Lily Pad SANE Center, lauded Cohilas for his work ethic.
