A collaboration between Albany State University and Southwest Georgia Technical College will make it easier for students with an Associate of Science degree in social work and criminal justice to transfer credits to ASU and earn a bachelor’s in both degree programs. 

“The addition of these two AS degrees is really adding another facet to our institution.  Our #1 priority is still workforce development, but I believe transfer degrees will add to our college’s prestige and standing. Most importantly, it will help our students who are interested in transferring to a four-year institution,” commented Dr. Craig Wentworth, SWGTC President.

Prior to the collaboration, SWGTC only offered the Associate of Applied Science degree in both fields.

“We decided to supplement the two programs with the AS degrees so that our students had more opportunities after graduation. If they decide to go straight to work – great; but if they choose to pursue a bachelor’s degree, the AS option will provide a more seamless transition between institutions/degrees,” said Dr. Annie McElroy, SWGTC Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The coursework for an AS degree incorporates more general education material, but an AS degree covers occupational subjects and issues.

 SWGTC will continue to offer the AAS degree option in both fields. Students on the AS track route, however, have more flexibility when it comes to transferring credits. The new program will be available spring semester, which begins January 7.

“The partnership between Albany State University and Southwest Georgia Technical College will create more opportunities for individuals to complete college in our region. The agreement shows the dedication that both institutions have to the betterment of our local economy and accessibility of education to all Georgians,” said Dr. Everette J.
