The Medical Staff of Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is continuing a tradition to celebrate Doctor’s Day by giving, not receiving.
In lieu of receiving individual gifts of appreciation, the Medical Staff at Phoebe are donating $2,500 each to Habitat For Humanity and The Anchorage on March 25.
The first donation will be presented to Habitat For Humanity, 911 Willow Oak Ct., at 9:30 a.m. The second donation will be presented to The Anchorage, 162 Hampton Lane, at 10:30 a.m.
National Doctor’s Day, designated through legislation as March 30, was first observed in 1933 in Winder, Ga. There the Barrow County Medical Society initiated the effort to set aside a day to pay lasting tribute to physicians. The first observance included the mailing of cards to physicians and their wives or placing flowers on the graves of deceased physicians.
Doctor’s Day was adopted to honor the profession, “its observance demanding some act of kindness, gift or tribute in remembrance of the doctors,” according to the 1933 resolution.
In October 1990, President George Bush signed into law a Senate Joint Resolution designating March 30 as Doctor’s Day. The legislation read in part:
“WHEREAS society owes a debt of gratitude to physicians for the sympathy and compassion of physicians in ministering to the sick and in alleviating human suffering,” so be it therefore.
