The Albany Civil Rights Institute (ACRI) is proud to announce the successful completion of its inaugural Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools® Summer Camp, marking a historic milestone in the organization's mission to educate, empower, and inspire future generations of leaders.

The community is invited to celebrate this landmark achievement during the Freedom Schools Summer Camp Finale on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. at the Albany Civil Rights Institute, where scholars will showcase the knowledge, creativity, leadership, and confidence they have developed throughout the six-week summer program.

The Freedom Schools Summer Camp is dedicated to literacy, leadership development, cultural enrichment, and civic engagement. We are deeply grateful to the Southern Poverty Law Center for investing in the children of Albany and Southwest Georgia. Their support has allowed us to create an environment where young people can grow academically while discovering the power of their voices and the importance of their history."

The Freedom Schools program is nationally recognized for preventing summer learning loss while cultivating a love for reading, strengthening self-esteem, encouraging social action, and inspiring scholars to become leaders in their schools and communities.

The finale celebration will feature student presentations and special performances highlighting the remarkable accomplishments of participating scholars. Families, community leaders, educators, elected officials, and supporters are invited to witness firsthand the impact of this transformational program. 

The ACRI also recognizes the dedication of its Freedom Schools® staff, volunteers, families, and community partners whose commitment made the inaugural program a tremendous success. Community members, media representatives, elected officials, school leaders, and supporters throughout Albany and Southwest Georgia are encouraged to attend and celebrate this historic occasion.
