Despite rainy conditions, community, state and local leaders gathered indoors for a unique and well-attended groundbreaking ceremony to officially launch the renovation of the Westtown Library.

Originally planned as an outdoor event, the ceremony was moved inside due to weather. Attendance remained strong, underscoring the community’s continued support and anticipation for the long-awaited project.

Chairman Lorenzo Heard opened the program by emphasizing the significance of the investment.

“This is the day that the Lord has made, and let us be glad and rejoice in it,” Heard said. “Today is about more than bricks, mortar and construction. It is about investing in people, investing in neighborhoods and investing in the future of this community.”

The project, supported by $900,000 in state funding, will transform the Westtown Library into a modern, accessible facility designed to serve residents of all ages—from children and families to job seekers and seniors.

Representative Gerald Greene highlighted the importance of collaboration in bringing the project to fruition.

“This is a reminder of what can happen when we all work together,” Greene said.

Robert Gaines, representing a statewide education and workforce development organization, noted the broader impact of the renovation.

“The renovation of Westtown Library is about much more than just updating a building,” Gaines said. “You all are investing in the community in a way that improves the overall quality of life for generations to come.”

Library Director Gail Evans reflected on the progress made to reach this milestone.

“We’re celebrating two milestones today receiving the funding we needed and getting this renovation started,” Evans said.

Commissioner Anthony Jones emphasized the long-term significance of the project.

“A legacy is not what you do while you live,” Jones said. “A legacy is what you leave behind.”

Also in attendance were members of the Dougherty County Board of Commissioners, including Commissioner Russell Gray and Commissioner Edward Newsome, as well as members of the Library Board of Trustees, community partners and residents.

Project partners, including LRA Constructors and SRJ Architects, were present and reaffirmed their commitment to delivering a modern, welcoming space for the community.

Library services will continue during construction through a bookmobile stationed in the Westtown area, ensuring residents maintain access to resources.

Once complete, the renovated Westtown Library will serve as a hub for education, technology and community engagement, creating opportunities for residents and strengthening the community for generations to come.
