Annual economic impact data released by the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) shows that Phoebe hospitals generate $2,504,095,254 in total economic impact across Georgia. Phoebe’s commitment to exceptional patient care drives not only better health outcomes but also substantial financial investment and job creation throughout southwest Georgia.

Phoebe Putney Health System President & CEO Scott Steiner said the findings reflect the system’s broad influence.

“Our mission begins and ends with exceptional patient care. This economic analysis shows how that mission also fuels southwest Georgia’s prosperity. From Albany to Americus to Sylvester, the care we provide supports thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in wages, keeping our communities strong and resilient,” said Steiner.

GHA’s data highlights Phoebe’s significant economic impact, especially in the counties where its hospitals are located. In Dougherty County, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital (PPMH) drives $1,703,581,170 in local economic impact. PPMH President Deb Angerami emphasized the hospital’s vital regional role.

“Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is proud to be a trusted regional referral center and a major employer for Dougherty County. The data reflect what our patients and neighbors already know – when you strengthen healthcare, you strengthen the local economy. We’ll continue investing in people, technology, and services that improve outcomes close to home,” said Angerami.

In Sumter County, Phoebe Sumter Medical Center contributes $238,001,739 in economic activity. Carlyle Walton, President of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, noted the importance of access to care.

“In Sumter County, access to high-quality, local care means better health and more opportunity. The jobs we support and the wages we generate ripple across the community from small businesses to schools while our caregivers focus on what matters most: patients and families,” said Walton.

In Worth County, Phoebe Worth Medical Center generates $39,610,721 in economic impact. Kim Gilman, President of Phoebe Worth Medical Center, highlighted the unique role of rural providers.

“Rural hospitals are community anchors. At Phoebe Worth, every dollar we spend, every job we support, and every patient we serve help sustain the vitality of Worth County. We’re committed to advancing care locally and meeting evolving community needs,” said Gilman.

Collectively, Phoebe’s hospital operations support 11,387 jobs statewide, including 9,035 in Dougherty, Sumter and Worth Counties. Those direct and indirect jobs generate $810,523,102 in household earnings across Georgia. Phoebe’s contributions also include $69,798,907 in community benefit and $858,288,476 in hospital expenditures in the most recent reporting period.

The detailed economic impact snapshots from each Phoebe hospital further reinforce the system’s essential role in sustaining healthy, thriving communities across southwest Georgia. The findings were developed through GHA’s partnership with IMPLAN®, a leader in economic impact modeling software, and used data from the Georgia Department of Community Health Annual Hospital Questionnaire and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Cost Report. The data focus on Phoebe’s three hospitals and do not include the full economic impact related to Phoebe Putney Health System employees not directly connected to one of the system’s hospitals.
