Thursday, August 28th, 2025
On August 27, 2025, Albany State University (ASU) marked a significant milestone with the official ribbon-cutting ceremonies for two additions to the East Campus: the Portia Holmes Shields Early Learning Center and a newly constructed 64-bed Residential Hall.
“These projects are bold investments in the future of Albany State University,” said ASU President Dr. Robert Scott. “They reflect our unwavering commitment to student success, academic innovation, and deep partnerships with the Albany community. With each new facility, we’re not just constructing buildings—we’re creating pathways that foster growth, inspire achievement, and expand opportunities for current and future students as well as our valued community partners.”
The morning began with the dedication of the Early Learning Center at 10 a.m., named in honor of ASU’s seventh and first female president, Dr. Portia Holmes Shields. Designed to serve both the campus and the Albany community, the facility provides safe and affordable childcare and functions as a real-world training environment for students in education, health, and physical therapy programs. Located near the Jones Brothers Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) Complex, the center will play a key role in enhancing academic engagement and community service.
Following the Early Learning Center, the university unveiled its new 30,682-square-foot residential facility, offering housing for junior and senior honor students. The building, located near Residence Hall 6, was developed with a focus on long-term sustainability and student success. With its intentional design to foster community and school pride, the residence hall reflects ASU’s commitment to student life and academic achievement.
Albany State University extends its sincere gratitude to the campus community, local leaders, and supporters whose continued dedication helps drive the institution’s mission forward. These new additions mark not only a celebration of progress, but a shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and the future of ASU.
