The Marines of Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany are once again champions of the Salty Sandbagger Golf Tournament, defeating the business community by seven points and taking home the coveted trophy during the sold-out semi-annual showdown held Wednesday, May 7, at River Pointe Golf Club.
Presented by the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission, the Salty Sandbagger is a signature initiative of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee. The event brings together Marines and members of the local business community for a day of competitive fun, partnership, and pride.
“The Salty Sandbagger isn’t just about golf, it’s about connection and relationship building,” said Matt Reed, Interim President & CEO of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce. “This event is a testament to the strength of our community’s relationship with MCLB Albany and reflects the ongoing commitment we share to support and advocate for the base and all who serve. Also, I would like to extend my deepest thanks to our Military Affairs Committee Co-Chairs, Dan Gillan and Don Gray, and our volunteers, for all of their hard work to make this event successful.
Colonel Matthew McKinney, Commanding Officer of MCLB Albany, echoed the spirit of partnership. “Our Marines value opportunities to engage with the business community beyond the base. The camaraderie and teamwork we experience here help build trust and reinforce the bonds that make Albany unique.”
For the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission, the Salty Sandbagger supports its mission to promote economic prosperity by connecting military and civilian sectors.
“We are truly honored to be a part of this wonderful event” said Jana Dyke, President & CEO of the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission. “This tournament is a meaningful way for our team to show appreciation to our partners at MCLB, while strengthening the relationships with our business partners in the region.”
As a designated Blue Star Families Outpost, Albany is recognized nationally for its commitment to supporting military-connected families. Initiatives like the Salty Sandbagger reinforce that commitment by building bridges between service members and civilians in meaningful ways.
Adding to the spirit of service, this year’s tournament featured interactive games on the course that served as a fundraiser for the Albany Young Marines. Thanks to the generosity of participants, the Chamber was able to donate more than $450 to support the leadership development and programming of this outstanding youth organization.
The Albany Area Chamber and Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission extend their appreciation to all participants, volunteers, and sponsors for making the Spring 2025 Salty Sandbagger Golf tournament a HUGE success. The business community will have another shot at the trophy when the Salty Sandbagger returns this fall.
