Watson Spence proudly announces the selection of partner Alfreda Sheppard as the new United States Magistrate Judge for the Middle District of Georgia, Albany Division, succeeding the retiring Magistrate Judge, the Honorable Thomas Q. Langstaff. Sheppard will conclude her role as a partner at Watson Spence at the end of this year and will officially begin her eight-year judicial term on January 4, 2025.
Sheppard has dedicated fifteen years to her legal career at Watson Spence, where she has established a distinguished practice specializing in civil litigation, employment law and product liability. She is also recognized for her experience as a criminal defense attorney, effectively handling cases at both state and federal levels.
Sheppard earned her law degree from the Thomas M. Cooley School of Law at Western Michigan University and holds an undergraduate degree from Fort Valley State University, along with a master’s degree from the University of Alabama. Prior to joining Watson Spence in 2009, she worked as a defense attorney for the Georgia Office of Public Defenders.
“This opportunity marks a significant transition in my professional life,” said Sheppard. “I was both humbled and honored when asked to consider the position. Serving in this capacity is a tremendous responsibility, and I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me by the members of the Merit Seletion Panel as well as the District Court judges for the Middle District.
My time at Watson Spence has been invaluable in shaping my legal career. The challenges I have faced, the clients I have represented and the mentorship I have received have all prepared me for this next step. I look forward to contributing to the judiciary with the same passion and commitment I have brought to my work over the years.”
Faison Middleton, managing partner at Watson Spence, commented on Alfreda’s achievement, saying, “While it’s difficult to say goodbye to a valued partner, we are always excited for the opportunities that our alumni have pursued over the years. Alfreda is an incredible asset to this firm, a close friend and confidant, an incredible lawyer, and a natural born leader. We look forward to continuing our personal and professional relationships with Alfreda, albeit in a new context. Our firm is dedicated to nurturing legal talent, and it’s rewarding to see our former colleagues succeed in new career paths. We take great pride in having contributed to Alfreda’s remarkable journey, give thanks for her contributions, and wish her well as she joins many of our alumni who serve on the bench or who have become our clients.”
Alfreda resides in Albany with her husband, Dwight, and their two sons.
