Horizons, South Georgia’s Cancer Coalition announces the return of its annual Pink Your Pumpkin campaign in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The Pink Your Pumpkin campaign is a fun initiative for the community to support Breast Cancer awareness and remind women to get their vital breast cancer screenings. The South Georgia community is invited to participate by decorating and displaying a pink pumpkin on their porch or in their window at their home or business. Tag Horizons and share the photo of your pink pumpkin on social media with #PinkYourPumpkin.

“It is time to kick off breast Cancer Awareness month and the team here at Horizons wants to encourage women in South Georgia to get screened,” said Elyse Bower, Director of Marketing and Development for Horizons. “One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime and 75% of these women will have no family history of breast cancer or other risk factors.”

Most doctors agree that breast cancer that is diagnosed early is typically easier to treat and offers the best survival chances, yet nearly 30% of Georgians (on an average year) do not have this life-saving screening. It is estimated that there will be 9,840 new cases of breast cancer in Georgia this year with an estimated 1,420 deaths (The American Cancer Society).

Horizons assists low-income, uninsured and underinsured women ages 40-64 in obtaining no-cost screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, and ultrasounds. Individuals must have a medical home, but no referral is needed. Horizons works in partnership with local hospitals, mammography centers, and primary care providers to help women receive the care they need.
