The Sowega Council on Aging (SCOA) is excited to announce a week of fun, free activities in celebration of Active Aging Week, Monday, September 30 through Friday, October 4. Active Aging Week is an annual event that promotes the benefits of leading an active, healthy lifestyle regardless of age. This year’s theme is designed to inspire mature adults to embrace wellness, fitness and an active life.

Izzie Sadler, Executive Director of SCOA, highlights the importance of this initiative, saying, “Active Aging Week is all about empowering our seniors to live life to the fullest. Staying active improves mental, physical and emotional well-being. At SCOA, we are committed to providing the resources and opportunities to help seniors maintain their independence and vitality.”

The week will kick off with an Open House Monday, September 30, to Wednesday, October 2, from 9 am to noon each day at the SCOA Regional Resource Center at 335 W. Society Ave., Albany, GA. Attendees can participate in free wellness activities, explore fitness classes and enjoy refreshments and giveaways, including a free Active Aging Week t-shirt while supplies last.

On Thursday, October 3, SCOA will host a Lunch & Learn event at 11 am. Robin McCord, Oncology Wellness Program Coordinator for the Phoebe Cancer Center, will present important Cancer Prevention Tips. A boxed lunch is included. While the Lunch & Learn is free, seating is limited, and registration is required by Monday, September 30. Interested participants should call 229-432-0994 Option 3 to secure a spot.

The week will wrap up with a fun-filled walk at Turtle Grove Park, Friday, October 4. The event begins at 9 am with a warm-up session, followed by the walk at 9:30 am. Participants can choose to walk 1 mile, 2 miles or more along the scenic Riverfront Trail. Free bottled water and blood pressure checks will be available for all participants.

Sadler added, “We want everyone to come out and enjoy these events. Whether you’re trying a new fitness class, attending our Lunch & Learn event or joining us for a walk at Turtle Grove Park, this is a great opportunity to stay active, make new friends and learn something new.”
