The Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission (ADEDC) today kicks off a weeklong celebration of existing industries in Albany-Dougherty County.  Albany-Dougherty Industry Celebration Week is one of the ways the commission provides recognition to the successes and contributions of existing industries to the community.

"Expansions by existing industries account for about 80 percent of new jobs in a community," said Barbara Rivera Holmes, director of marketing and existing industries for the ADEDC.

"Their contributions can at times be overlooked in the thirst for new industries. But existing industries have strong roots and a real commitment to Albany,” she said. “Nothing says as much about our community than when one of our existing industries chooses to expand and invest in Albany-Dougherty County. It’s such an honor.”

Existing industries include companies such as Mars Chocolate North America and Sasco Chemical Group, which this year celebrate 50 years and 65 years in Albany, respectively, as well as others such as Coats & Clark, which in addition to its decades-old manufacturing operation in Albany consolidated its North American distribution hub here in 2010, and Outdoor Network, which relocated to Albany in 2012.

"We are so thankful for all our existing industries and the value and commitment they offer to Albany-Dougherty County," Holmes said.

Industry Week events include:

  • The ADEDC Retention Task Force will tour the MillerCoors brewery on Monday.

"The task force, which includes some of our key partners in economic development, tours an existing industry every month build relationships and learn more about how they can better support businesses," Holmes said.  "We were happy the MillerCoors tour coincided with Industry Celebration Week."

  • A new ADEDC video, which focuses on existing industries, will launch on Tuesday.
  • The 2014 ADEDC Industry Award winners will be announced on Wednesday at the Industry Rise n Shine breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at Merry Acres Event Center in Albany.  The breakfast is open to the public but pre-registration is required. To register, visit http://www.albanyga.com.
  • The ADEDC will hold a golf outing for past and new ADEDC Industry Award winners on Thursday followed by a Business After Hours reception.  The reception is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Doublegate Country Club.

"The reception is a great opportunity to network with others in the business community and to get to better know representatives from our existing industries," Holmes said.
