John Rodman, president and CEO of Limbcare Prosthetics & Orthotics, talks about the company he founded and how the business came to be, which encompasses numerous locations throughout south Georgia.

Hi.  I’m John Rodman with Limbcare Prosthetics & Orthotics.  I’m the President and CEO of the company.  We’ve been in existence here in the Albany area for approximately since 2005.  Since then we have seven locations.  We’re in Americus, Cordele, Tifton, Valdosta, and three in Albany, Georgia.  The services that we provide at Limbcare Prosthetics & Orthotics is making artificial limbs, orthotic devices; we do mastectomy products, we do pediatrics.  So anything that you can think of from a basic foot orthotic to a knee brace to a back brace, somebody getting in a traumatic injury, we build all these things from either prefab or custom.

The majority of our work would be the prosthetic devices that we use for people and the majority of those people are either diabetic patients or traumatic injuries.  Like I said, we deal with peds to geriatrics, the elderly, and most of our clientele would be the elderly people.  And like I said, if you need any services for the mastectomy products we have staff on to be able to treat the ladies for that.

I got my first start when I entered the military.  I remember when I was a young boy I used to watch the March of Dimes and used to key in on little kids wearing metal braces and everything.  And it never dawns on you the actual person that actually made the appliances that went on these children to be able to make them be able to get up and walk and function.  So when I went into the service I learned this trade.  It was called the Orthotic Specialist Course in the United States Army.  So I started off there in the army in 1979.  It was a 52-week course.

And then from there I moved on to various army medical centers working with combat troops and their families.  And from there I got certified, Certified Prosthetist Orthotist, which is a national certification.  And they sent me back to the academy at Health Sciences in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where I eventually started teaching and training young soldiers like I did when I went in to fabricate orthotic devices.  I ended up going back to Eisenhower Army Medical Center where I worked with Colonel Jack Timmons, which is the grandfather of Buster Posey, and so we had a little relationship there.

When I got out of the service I went to Duke University Medical Center and I was the Orthotics Supervisor there and I was also an ABC Examiner.  And what happened was I moved to Albany, Georgia in 1991.  I worked for another O&P company and at that point I just felt like that I was working so hard for them I might as well work hard for myself.  So I ventured out and opened up my own company in 2005 and since then I’ve opened, like I said before, seven locations, and hopefully to continue to grow.
