Jackie Sizemore Talks About Smart Ordering of Advanced Inventory

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Jackie Sizemore, Owner of Backwoods Outdoors in Albany talks about how advance ordering and inventory management is crucial to his business, and how it can apply to your business.

I'm Jackie Sizemore, I'm with Backwoods Outdoors. We sell a host of things, from outdoor apparel to tennis shoes, we've got it all. I think one of the big things to talk about would be the separation between us and box stores. Which would be, the guys that help you here, you can ask an enormous amount of questions, and their real detailed information. They can tell you on a personal level and help you with what you want to know. I think that's a big difference with our store, you can come in and kind of decide or get some advice from people who know what they're doing.

It's a challenge in our business, we have to buy for a year in advance, and to know what's going to sell and what's going to help you through the year, is sometimes a big challenge, it is a great challenge. If I was able to order for next week, this week, it would be a lot easier, but I have to order one year in advance. If you don't do that you're going to run out of stuff, and the last thing you want to do is to have empty shelves. Because people walk in about twice and then the third time they're not coming back.

We try to keep interesting things, things that you need, and we try to keep it all the time. When you come into the store hopefully you'll see new things, things that interest you, and a good supply of them. We go from boots, to waders, to shotgun shells, to bullets, any kinds of guns.

We're a Class 3 dealer with the silencers, fully automatic weapons. We had a big push on the ARs about a year ago, now everybody's got their ARs which is a military type 223. Now they want to add silencers to it. Silencers are a Class 3 weapon, so there's s a whole different set of paperwork. There's not a lot of people in town that do Class 3 weapons. That's a big push and people are real interested in stockpiling ammunition, and being prepared for whatever.

I don't know what they're getting prepared for, but they like to be prepared so that keeps us busy. It keeps us on our toes, it's a lot of paperwork. Shotgun shells… We always run out of shotgun shells, so you buy them once a year also, and you have to buy a whole lot of them to get them at the right price. It's a challenge to keep those. Most stores are always out of shotgun shells.

You try to go with the seasons, from duck season to deer season, duck season, predator hunting. There is a host of things that you have to be ready for. Fishing season. It's a big challenge, you could stay in the back just trying to keep orders and everything going 24/7. I like to see every person that comes through my store. I think that's a big difference when you've got a relationship with every person that walks in the store.
