Albany State University (ASU) students gathered virtually to watch a movie last night for an ASU Night In. This was the first student event since the announcement that ASU will be moving to online and remote instruction on March 30. Students used the Google Chrome extension, Netflix Party, to access the event.  

The ASU Student Activities Advisory Board (SAAB) and the Student Government Association (SGA) planned the event so students could spend time with each other while maintaining social distancing. 

Da’Monie McRae, a senior chemistry and forensic science double major and SAAB President said, “As a student, I understand the frustration with the move to online and remote instruction. As a student leader, I have the power to change the narrative. SGA and SAAB have joined forces to enhance the student experience beyond campus, so that we never forget we are a RAMily.” 

Students watched the movie “Spenser Confidential.” Netflix Party synchronizes video playback and adds group chat to Netflix shows. “I love my HBCU. Not even a pandemic can break up this RAMily,” said senior middle grades education major, Jordan Davis.  

Student engagement is a key part of development for ASU students and an integral part to student success. ASU’s goal is to champion academics while encouraging community, developing leadership and offering opportunity for mental and physical wellness.  

“Even though we are physically separated, we are still a RAMily. ASU is committed to ensuring that every student feels a sense of belonging and connection as a Golden Ram,” said Dedra Williams, associate dean for student engagement. 

The Office of Student Engagement is hard at work planning student virtual activities for the remainder of the semester including workout sessions, card and gaming tournaments and more.
