The Association of County Commissioners of Georgia Civic Affairs Foundation has awarded Dougherty County the Georgia County Internship Program (GCIP) grant for a Disaster Recovery Project.

The Association County Commissioners of Georgia Civic Affairs Foundation was created in 2006 to promote civic and community engagement amongst the youth. Through innovative programs, the foundation has been successful in providing diverse opportunities that enhance citizen education, encourage civic engagement and community improvement, and promote participation in county government. The Georgia County Internship Program (GCIP), created in 2010, receives funding through the Foundation to fund internships for college students and recent graduates to gain first-hand knowledge of county government operations. Funding is provided by the Foundation through grants, sponsorships and corporate and private donations. Since its inception, 425 internship opportunities have been provided to 75 counties.

The GCIP Grant Review Committee met in January to review applications and selected 36 counties to receive grants to cover the cost of 40 internships for the 2020 program. This year, Dougherty County was selected as a recipient of a grant funded by GCIP for a Disaster Recovery Project.

Through GCIP, counties are shaping the next generation of leaders while helping them gain a better understanding of the inner workings of county government. Internships are two-fold. Hence, students
gain experience while counties foster growth through partnerships and build a steady pipeline for potential hires. Counties also gain a fresher perspective, helping them stay engaged and connected with the community.

“Internships give students the opportunity to interchangeably use knowledge acquired from the classroom in real life situations. They equip students with the additional skills needed to give them an edge in a competitive market while allowing them to explore different career pathways,” said Association County Commissioners of Georgia Civic Affairs Foundation President Jim Monacell.

“Thanks to our sponsors, the Foundation is able to help future leaders explore the opportunities available in county government.”
