Flint RiverQuarium Environmental Education Center and Thronateeska Heritage Center Certified Sensory Inclusive

Staff Report From Albany CEO

Wednesday, January 29th, 2020

KultureCity has partnered with the Flint RiverQuarium and Thronateeska Heritage Center to make all of the programs and events at the aquarium, as well as at Thronateeska’s planetarium and science musueum, sensory inclusive. This new initiative will promote an accommodating and positive experience for all Flint RiverQuarium and Thronateeska visitors with a sensory issue.

As part of the certification process, Flint RiverQuarium and Thronateeska staff were trained by leading medical professionals on how to recognize visitors with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation. Sensory bags, equipped with noise canceling headphones (provided by Puro Sound Labs), fidget tools, verbal cue cards (produced in conjunction with Boardmaker) and weighted lap pads will be available to all guests at the Flint RiverQuarium and Thronateeska who may feel overwhelmed by the environment.

Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions. One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to overstimulation and noise, which can be a challenge in a public venue like the Flint RiverQuarium or Thronateeska. With the new certification, the two organizations are now better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities, ensuring that they have the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible.

Prior to attending an event, families can download the free KultureCity app to view available sensory features and where they can access them. Also, on the app is the Social Story, which will provide a preview of what to expect while enjoying visit to the Flint RiverQuarium or Thronateeska.

“Our communities are what shapes our lives and to know that the Flint RiverQuarium and Thronateeska Heritage Center are both willing to go the extra mile to ensure that everyone, no matter their ability, is included in their community is amazing,” said Dr. Julian Maha, co-founder of KultureCity.
