Dougherty County Sheriff Holds Promotion Ceremony for New Chief Deputy

Dougherty County Sheriff, Kevin Sproul, held a promotion ceremony to recognize Chief Terron Hayes as the new Chief Deputy of the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Department. He succeeds former Chief, Robert Daniels, who is retiring from the position after 45 years of service.

A native of Moultrie, Georgia, Chief Hayes began his career in law enforcement serving as a Police Corporal with the Albany Police Department (APD) while pursuing his college degree. He later served as the President of the School Resource Officer Program and Regional Director for the Georgia Association of School Resource Officers. He also served as a member of the Georgia Gang Investigator Association. While with APD, Chief Hayes served in the Uniform and Investigative Divisions.

Chief Hayes served the Dougherty County School System Police Department as a Police Lieutenant, Supervisor/Coordinator of the Gang Resistance Education and Training Program (G.R.E.A.T.) and supervisor of the Police Against Crime (P.A.C.) and Students Against Violence Program (S.A.V.). Since his employment with the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office in February of 2009, he has served as the Director of Crime Prevention and Intervention, as well as the Director of the Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety (C.H.A.M.P.S.) program.

He also serves as a member of the Command Staff and due to his prevention and intervention with youth, has been featured on the A&E television series, “Beyond Scared Straight,” for three seasons.

A member of The 100 Black Men of Greater Southwest Georgia Area, where he currently serves as Director of Programs,” Chief Hayes holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology from Albany State University. He is also a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., where he serves as Immediate Past Basileus for Eta Omicron Graduate Chapter and Former Region II Representative for the State Council of Georgia for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He also serves as the Chief Security to the 7th District Representative and Co-Director of the National Security Team for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and was the recipient of the 2014 Martin Luther King Dream Award.

Providing motivational speaking, community/youth program implementation, youth adolescence and behavioral health, intervention and prevention programs, youth mentoring, gang identification and recognition and community-oriented policing concepts, Chief Hayes has been an avid community contributor throughout his career.
