Chehaw to Memorialize Jim Fowler

Staff Report From Albany CEO

Monday, May 13th, 2019

Chehaw is working on a way to memorialize Jim Fowler with the creation of an interactive exhibit, the Jim Fowler Experience. The Jim Fowler Experience, while early in the concept process, will include new animal exhibits and interactive media focused around his adventures and love of birds of prey.  Chehaw hopes that the Jim Fowler Experience will highlight and honor his 60 years spent blending education and entertainment to inspire people to care about wildlife. His appearances on Johnny Carson, Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, the Today Show, and even Seinfeld, exposed global audiences to his passion of wildlife conservation. That enthusiasm was palpable. Chehaw hopes to infuse his passion into the Jim Fowler experience. Chehaw is currently working to finalize these concepts which will be made available to the public in the coming months as they are complete.

Fowler’s life long message was that humans and animals are far more connected than just at the grocery store. Multiple attempts have been made over the years to honor Fowler’s contribution to Chehaw and the community. However, these attempts were never able to get off the ground due to a variety of reasons.

“Chehaw is his crowning achievement,” said Don Meeks, Executive Director. “What better way to carry on his legacy than to continue to tell his story?” Meeks said that Chehaw has spoken with Fowler’s family for years about finding a way to build an interactive exhibit on the Park. Jim’s death creates the catalyst to move into the planning stages and provide an answer to the question of how to carry on his legacy.

Fowler’s family has asked that people who want to contribute in his honor, do so by donating to the fund Chehaw has set up to begin the effort of making the Jim Fowler Experience a reality. Donations may be sent to Chehaw at 105 Chehaw Park Rd. Albany, GA 31701 and earmarked “Jim Fowler Experience”.
