Dozens of area athletic directors, coaches, trainers and school administrators filled the conference center at Phoebe Northwest for a Sports Symposium hosted by Phoebe Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. “Sports is an integral part of southwest Georgia and knowing how to manage sports injuries is crucial for our athletes, and why we felt it was important to offer this opportunity to our community,” said Troy Skidmore, DO, Phoebe Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Phoebe’s team of experts shared the latest news and best practices relating to sports injuries. Topics covered included: recognition of skin condition & infectious disease in athletes, concussion management, sudden cardiac arrest and emergency planning. The symposium also included breakouts sessions where attendees learned the proper technique for spine boarding and taping methods.

The highlight of the symposium was special guest speaker Ricardo Lockette, an Albany native and standout wide receiver. While playing for the Seattle Seahawks, Lockette suffered a spinal cord injury during a game in November 2015 that could have left him paralyzed or even killed him. Lockette shared his inspiring story of perseverance, overcoming challenges and the importance of continuing education on spinal cord injuries.

“I should not be here today, but because of great paramedics and athletic trainers who knew what to do in that moment; I am able to live a normal life. It is so important for our coaches and athletic trainers to be prepared everyday like its game day. Injuries can happen any time, even during practices, and knowing what to do can be the difference between life and death, said Lockette.

“It was an honor to have Mr. Lockette join us today and have him share his personal experience. It is very important that we provide coaches and athletic trainers with the knowledge needed to properly handle sports injuries. We are committed to protecting our young athletes and help keep them in the game,” said Dr. Skidmore.
