Chehaw Reopens on a Limited Basis after Hurricane Michael

Staff Report From Albany CEO

Wednesday, October 24th, 2018

Chehaw reopened Saturday, Oct 20, 2018 on a limited basis. Until further notice, the Park portion of Chehaw will be open at no cost. The main loop road, campground, remaining pavilions, Splash Park and event areas have been cleared of trees and debris and are ready for use. Crews are currently working to reopen the Play Park. Some, if not most, of the Play Park features should be available for play this weekend.  The Zoo will remain closed until it can be determined safe for the public. Guests are advised to use caution, especially when using the hiking and biking trails. While some work has been done, there are still leaning trees and debris that may come down in the wind. The campground is still open and functioning for guests.

All of the scheduled events in the upcoming weeks will continue as planned. This includes this weekend’s Disc Golf Tournament and Traditional Skills Gathering, next weekend’s Spooktacular event in the Zoo, and the Muckalee Creek Arts and Crafts Show and Firefighter’s Chili Blowout Nov 3-4. All weddings, reunions, and special events will continue as planned.

The Park, and especially Zoo, received major damage from Hurricane Michael. Staff was able to successfully move all animals to safety before the storm ensuring that no animals were lost or injured. However, like much of the area, there is widespread, massive, and incalculable damage throughout the Zoo. It will be many months and years before Chehaw can recover. Chehaw staff and Park Authority Board are also currently working to determine what the significant damage means for this year’s Festival of Lights. Directors will continue to update as we learn what this means for the future of the Park and Zoo.

Chehaw will have two open workdays for volunteers this weekend. Those wishing to help should arrive at the Log Cabin (located at the back of the Zoo parking lot) at 9 a.m. each day. Please wear closed-toe shoes and bring any equipment you have available and are comfortable using. Volunteers will be fed lunch both days. Those wishing to volunteer at other times can contact Jackie at [email protected] or 229.430.3012.
