Phoebe to Host Annual Women’s Health Fair October 28th

Staff Report From Albany CEO

Tuesday, October 24th, 2017

Cancer awareness and resilience will be the main topics discussed at this year’s Annual Women’s Health Fair, which will be held on Saturday, October 28 on Albany State University’s West Campus in the Student Center. The event, which is free and open to the public, features health screenings, information booths, free continental breakfast and lunch, door prizes, physician-led sessions and a survivor recognition ceremony.

This year’s theme, “Be Resilient,” is about inspiring women and letting them know that they are capable of bouncing back from or adjusting to challenges. The special guest speaker for the event is Evelyn Braxton, star of WE TV’s Braxton Family Values. Braxton was not only a full-time mother but a pastor and her children’s singing coach.  Due to personal struggles that Braxton had to overcome, she embarked on a new passion - life coaching. She also started an organization, “God Can Heal the Heart,” a self-empowering mentorship that helps encourage, motivate and support other men and women who have been through personal trauma.

Other presenters and topics include:

· Different Guidelines for Breast Screening
Dr. Shawnta Anakwah, Oncologist

· Genetics
Cathy Shoemaker, Survivorship Navigator

· Lymphedema Physical Therapy
Kirsty Vanderwalt, Physical Therapist

Health screenings, including blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, will be ongoing from 8 a.m. to noon. Flu shots will also be available. The Student Center at ASU’s West Campus is located at 2400 Gillionville Road.
