Phoebe Upgrades Robotic Surgical System

Surgeons operating at Phoebe now have access to the most advanced robotic surgical system. Phoebe recently acquired the da Vinci Xi System, advancing the technology used in minimally invasive surgery.
 
The addition of this new robotic system allows surgeons to perform many types of complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional techniques, including laparoscopic and traditional open surgery.
 
Sanjay Munireddy, MD, a surgical oncologist with Phoebe Physicians with specialized training in robotic surgery, uses the new da Vinci Xi System often and says it provides many advantages to our patients. “For the patient this allows us to avoid large incisions, less blood loss, creates less pain and quicker recovery time, less infections and shorter hospital stays.”
 
Dr. Munireddy uses the da Vinci Xi for numerous kinds of procedures, including colon polyps/tumors, colon cancer, distal pancreatic tumor/cancer, hernia repairs, pelvic lymph node staging in uterine cancer, stomach tumor/cancers, and more.
 
The Xi model has broader capabilities than prior generations of the da Vinci System. It can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multi-quadrant surgeries in the areas of gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery.
 
By enabling efficient access throughout the abdomen and chest, the da Vinci Xi System expands upon core da Vinci System features, including wristed instruments, 3D-HD visualization, intuitive motion, and an ergonomic design. As with all da Vinci Surgical Systems, the surgeon is 100% in control of the robotic-assisted da Vinci System, which translates his/her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient's body. The Xi System's immersive 3D-HD vision system provides surgeons a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient.
 
Compared to earlier da Vinci Systems, the da Vinci Xi System’s key features include:

· New overhead instrument arm architecture designed to facilitate anatomical access from virtually any position.

· New endoscope digital architecture that creates a simpler, more compact design with improved visual definition and clarity.

· An ability to attach the endoscope to any arm, providing flexibility for visualizing the surgical site.

· Smaller, thinner arms with newly designed joints that offer a greater range of motion than ever before.

· Longer instrument shafts designed to give surgeons greater operative reach.
 
Phoebe added its first da Vinci Surgical System in 2010 and will continue to utilize that model in addition to the da Vinci Xi. Phoebe is one of two hospitals south of Macon that uses the da Vinci Xi.
