A steady flow of people streamed through the gates at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany to enjoy an Independence Day celebration June 26.

Visitors enjoyed a variety of entertainment, including several activities for children, live music as well as a host of different food vendors.

One event not on the schedule, however, was a temporary suspension of the festivities due to imminent lightning in the vicinity of the base. Guests were instructed to take cover and offered shelter in buildings on the base. The hallways and open office spaces were filled with citizens from the community.

“We regret having to temporarily postpone things for right now, but we assure you as soon as we get the all clear we will be right back out there enjoying the festivities,” Lt. Col James C. Carroll, III, commanding officer, MCLB Albany said.

After careful monitoring of the weather situation, base officials issued an all clear and guests returned to enjoy the fireworks show.

July 4 is celebrated in recognition of the Continental Congress approving a final draft of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 4, 1776.
