Paula Watts has been in the floral business at Petal Pushers Flower Shoppe for 12 years and 2011 is one of the toughest years she has experienced. The company sells all types of floral arrangements for all types of occasions – weddings, funerals, holidays, birthdays, babies, anniversaries and just for everyday enjoyment.

“Business was good until July but it has really slowed down since then,” she reported.

Located on Dawson Road across from Merry Acres Hotel, Petal Pushers is a full-service flower store with four employees. Watts is working to maintain her business through this tough economy.

“We’re getting more involved with community events to get our name out there,” she said. “We also provide arrangements to many local restaurants so people can see our work for themselves.”

“We’re also trying to participate and be more involved with the city. Tough times make it hard to do that, but we think it’s the only way to make things better.”

At the same time, Watts is focused on ensuring that her arrangements incorporate the best of contemporary floral design. Fresh and airy designs are among those currently in favor.

“We try to make sure each arrangement is something special and not “everyday” because it’s not every day that you get flowers,” Watts said.

The store purchases its flowers from Miami in order to offer a better selection of quality product. Costs have gone up in 2011, but Watts has worked to maintain prices to customers.

“It’s tough right now but we’re hopeful that we’ll turn a corner soon,” she said.
