Despite the dismal August jobs report, IT employment continued its month-over-month climb last month growing for the 19th consecutive month.
According to a monthly index of IT jobs developed and published by TechServe Alliance, a collaboration of IT services firms, clients, consultants and suppliers, the number of IT jobs increased by 2,100 to 4,053,400 jobs in August, up by more than 107,000 jobs fromAugust 2010or 2.7%.
The August IT Index has been adjusted to account for the Verizon workers who were on strike the week the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) conducted the nation's job count. These workers have since returned to their jobs. Without the adjustment, the IT Index would have reported a decline of 7,000 from the previous month.
"While we recognize the fragility of the economy and the general labor markets, we continue to see strong demand for IT professionals," commentedMark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. "Absent further deterioration of the general economy and its impact on corporate investment in IT, we remain optimistic we will continue to see growth in IT employment for the foreseeable future," added Roberts.
