Real average hourly earnings for all employees declined by 0.6 percent from February to March, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. This decrease stemmed from the 0.5 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), while average hourly earnings remained unchanged.

Real average weekly earnings declined by 0.5 percent over the month, as a result of the decrease in real average hourly earnings combined with no change in the average workweek.

Real average hourly earnings fell by 1.0 percent, seasonally adjusted, from March 2010 to March 2011. A 0.6 percent increase in average weekly hours combined with the decrease in real average hourly earnings resulted in a 0.4 percent decrease in real average weekly earnings during this period.


Production and nonsupervisory employees

Real average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory employees decreased by 0.7 percent from February to March, seasonally adjusted. This decrease stemmed from a 0.6 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) combined with a 0.1 percent decrease in average hourly earnings.

Real average weekly earnings decreased 0.5 percent over the month, as a 0.3 percent increase in the average workweek combined with the decrease in real average hourly earnings.

Real average hourly earnings fell 1.0 percent, seasonally adjusted, from March 2010 to March 2011. A 0.9 percent increase in the average workweek combined with the decrease in real average hourly earnings resulted in a 0.2 percent decrease in real average weekly earnings during this period.


Real Earnings for April 2011 is scheduled to be released on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 8:30 a.m. (EDT).
