ITW Chemtronics in Kennesaw makes chemical products for the telecom and electrical components industry. Nothing fancy, really.
Yet Chemtronics serves as something of a bellwether for Georgia -- and the nation’s -- economic recovery. It’s growing, making money and hiring. And, unlike construction and real estate, one-time pillars of Atlanta’s crumbled economy, manufacturers like Chemtronics offer perhaps the best hope for the region’s economic revival.
January was the most successful month for U.S. factories in seven years, the Institute for Supply Management reported earlier this week, as consumers the world over bought large amounts of U.S.-made cars, computers, appliances and mining equipment.
Manufacturers added 136,000 jobs last year, the first annual net gain since 1997. The construction industry, meanwhile, lost another 75,000 jobs last month.
