Governor Deal Warns of Budget Challenges

Governor Nathan Deal Tuesday warned Georgia lawmakers accustomed to slashing state spending that their most difficult budget challenge lies ahead.

For three years, the Georgia General Assembly has been forced to cut agency budgets across state government to offset anemic tax collections resulting from the recession.

But the new governor and legislature face an even more austere fiscal climate this year because Georgia is about to lose almost $1 billion in federal economic stimulus funds.
