A wide-ranging coalition of businesses and consumer groups is opposing Georgia Power Co.'s request to increase its rates and its profits.

An expert hired by the coalition filed testimony Friday at the Georgia Public Service Commission. James T. Seleckey, managing partner of the Missouri-based energy consulting firm Brubaker & Associates, said the requested profit increase alone would add $1 billion over the next three years and raise the average homeowner's bill by $137 over that period.

He's representing a coalition that includes some of the largest companies in Georgia, the consumer advocacy group Georgia Watch, the retiree organization AARP, and MARTA, Atlanta's rapid transit agency.
