The Georgia Public Service Commission voted Tuesday to hold public hearings across the state on rate increase requests filed by Georgia Power Co. and Atlanta Gas Light Co.

Georgia Power has proposed a three-year rate hike of just more than $1 billion. About $615 million of the increase would take effect in January.

That first installment of the rate hike would raise monthly bills for the average business by 7.7 percent to 10.3 percent and increase residential customer bills by 10.1 percent, or $10.88 per month.
