Fourteen to run for governor as candidate qualifying ends

As House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) waited early Monday to file his paperwork to seek re-election, he looked around the Capitol. "There are always one or two surprises this week," he said.
He was right, too. As candidate qualifying ended at noon Friday, a number of races had changed dramatically. One announced gubernatorial candidate was suddenly not running for governor, a veteran state House member was running for governor and a former speaker of the House was running for labor commissioner.
