Property tax reform bill gaining momentum

A major property tax reform bill is expected to see traction when state lawmakers return April 12 from a spring break.  The bill, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock), would require counties to send out annual property tax assessments and extend the time for owner appeals.

It’s widely viewed as the most sweeping property tax reform bill possibly in decades, but at least since former Gov. Roy Barnes’ 1999 “Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights.” That law targeted so-called “backdoor” tax increases, forcing local officials to roll back millage rates when property assessments rise or at least let the public know through a series of public hearings.  (read more at ajc.com)
