Georgia landed 14 companies on the 2010 Fortune 500 list, one more than it had in 2009 thanks to the relocation of NCR Corp. from Dayton, Ohio, to Duluth, Ga.  Atlanta tied for fourth-most Fortune 500 companies with 10.  Fortune magazine compiles its list of the biggest and best businesses based on 2009 fiscal and calendar year financial performance, focusing on revenue.

The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) ranked higher than any other Georgia company, but fell four spots to land at 29th with $66.2 billion in revenue. Fortune said the “tight credit, a dormant housing market, and near-double digit unemployment" hurt Home Depot's revenue. “CEO Frank Blake also is slowing down Home Depot's expansion plans -- the retailer will open only a dozen new stores this year, compared with the hundred-plus it used to add in years past -- and focusing on customer service, something its rival Lowe's is better known for.” (read more at Atlanta Business Chronicle)
