Dr. Mosely to Retire at the End of the School Year

Dr. David C. Mosely, superintendent for the Dougherty County School System, told the Dougherty County Board of Education that he will resign his position at the end of the 2016-2017 school year for health and family reasons. Following a career that spanned nearly 50 years, Dr. Mosely came out of retirement in 2014 to take on the job of superintendent and turn the Dougherty County School System around.

“Working in Dougherty County has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional career,” Dr. Mosely said. “I’m proud of the work that we’ve been able to do to give the students and the community a system they can be proud of.”

During his tenure, graduation rates have improved at each of the DCSS high schools, student and employee attendance is up and dropouts are down.

Mosely has served as superintendent in six Georgia school districts.He retired as superintendent of the Glynn County School System in 1999 completing 34 years of full time service in public education, distinguishing himself with many recognitions including being honored as the Georgia Association of Education Leadership State Superintendent of the Year in 1999.

Prior to being chosen to his first superintendent post for Decatur County Schools in 1985, Dr. Mosely served as classroom teacher, varsity basketball coach, assistant principal and principal. He has also served as adjunct faculty member of NOVA University teaching in the Education Leadership program, where he earned his doctorate degree in 2006. He holds specialists and masters degrees from Valdosta State University and his bachelors degree from the University of Georgia. He also holds Georgia L-7 Leadership Certification.

Assistant Superintendent Jack Willis, who came on board with Mosely in 2014, will also retire at the end of the year. Willis, a former superintendent, principal and band director, also has more than 50 years of experience in public education.
