Darton State College Cordele Center Opens its Doors

Staff Report From Albany CEO

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015

On Wednesday, January 7th, the Darton State College Cordele Center welcomed students to its new center in downtown Cordele as classes for the spring semester began. The new three-story, 60,000+ sq. ft. building enables Darton to offer more courses and offer extensive support services.

The new building was funded by an $8 million Crisp County SPLOST. The community, led by the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce and the Cordele-Crisp County Industrial Development Council partnered to bring together the resources needed to build the new permanent higher education center.

“It is exciting to see the citizens of Cordele and Crisp County so committed to improving their community through creating a more educated workforce. The new center will serve as a regional facility for higher education, providing even more opportunities for students considering college,” said Dr. Jones, interim president at Darton State College. “Our desire is to also work with our sister institutions to expand educational opportunities for the citizens in the region.”

Students were not the only ones who got a look at the new center on Wednesday. The Cordele-Crisp County Chamber of Commerce held its ribbon cutting ceremony. Many community members and local officials were in attendance as well as State Representative Buddy Harden; Albany State University Interim President, Dr. Art Dunning; and Georgia Southwestern State University Interim President, Dr. Charles Patterson.

Darton State College first began offering classes in Cordele in January 2002.  The Cordele campus offers day and evening classes. Students can complete all of their core courses for most two- and four-year degrees. The Darton State College Cordele Center is located at 134 11th Avenue in downtown Cordele.
