With concerns over public safety a priority in most municipalities, business has been good this year for Albany Communications, the Motorola Solutions two-way radio dealer for southwestern Georgia. Sales to police, fire and emergency response departments have been strong.

“Many of these purchases have been in the works for awhile and are covered by federal grants. As a result, they haven’t been affected by recent budget cutting,” said Jim Deal, owner of Albany Communications.

Founded in 1962, Albany Communications offers a full line of mobile and portable communication products for state and local governments, federal governments, and a variety of businesses including manufacturing, construction, farming and retail. The company has two locations in Georgia – Albany, which serves the surrounding 15-county area and Columbus, which serves the surrounding 10-county area.

New Technologies Transforming Public Safety

According to Deal, new technologies such as in-vehicle cameras and computers are transforming the public safety sector. Today Motorola’s high-performance two-way radios operate on an integrated voice and data network, which enables advanced performance and reliability. According to Deal, “911 center are now computer-driven as are communication devices in police cars and other emergency response vehicles.”

A recognized leader in providing public safety communication solutions, Motorola Solutions has several designs in development to further automate different public safety processes. For example, to simplify documentation for police officers on patrol in a police car the company is evaluating technologies that would enable officers to attach a video recording of an incident to a file rather than writing a description on a report. Global Positioning System (GPS) data could be attached to identify a location and scans of a driver’s license or license plate could capture name and vehicle information.

Taking a Positive Approach to Economic Development

Deal believes city and county leaders need to set the example by taking a positive approach to leading and promoting the Albany area.

“We risk becoming stagnant if we don’t attract more economic development to the area. I think we need to think positively about our community and emphasize that it’s a great place to live, work and raise a family,” Deal said.

Business leaders need to get behind city and county leaders, share ideas and work together, according to Deal. “We need to recover from losing Cooper, Bob’s Candy and Merck. I’m in favor of tax and other incentives to bring more businesses to the area.”
