With uncertain economic news dominating the headlines, consumers have remained cautious. Discretionary spending has also been limited by high gas and food prices. Yet business at Simply You Medical Spa has been “fantastic,” according to Kathy Harsh, office manager and nurse.

“I think beauty remains a number one priority among women,” Harsh said. “A lot of our business is word of mouth as customers bring in their friends and families.”

Summer is typically the spa’s slowest season as customers go out of town on vacation or stay at home with children who are out of school. Weight loss business goes down in the summer every year but gets back on track in the fall, according to Harsh.

Simply You Medical Spa provides individualized restorative health and wellness services, aesthetic treatments, wrinkle treatments, skin rejuvenation and body treatments. The spa was established three years ago and currently has locations in Albany and Donalsonville, Ga. Except for the receptionist, the spa employs only nurses who typically also work at area hospitals, clinics or medical practices.

Offering more

In early 2011, the spa acquired a new laser that, according to Harsh, is “exceptionally good.” Laser treatments can help rejuvenate skin by evening skin tone and removing blemishes. Harsh credits word of mouth on the new laser for bringing in more business this year.

The spa is expanding its Albany location to offer a dedicated massage room as well as all natural facials using Darphine skincare products, an Estee Lauder line. A masseuse is the latest addition to the staff. “We’ve wanted to add massages to our services for awhile now but just didn’t have the room or the right person,” Harsh said. “We’re all excited to be able to have massage ourselves and for our customers.”

Getting the word out

According to Harsh, the biggest challenge the spa faces is getting information out on all the services offered. The spa’s new website recently launched and it has a presence on Facebook.

“We just added a new answering service as well so customers can easily get information on our services,” Harsh explained. The spa also pushes information on current specials out to customers every month via email and advertises on television.“The most important thing we want people to know is that we have a wonderfully friendly atmosphere at the spa and we genuinely care about you and your health,” Harsh said.
