With widespread adoption of smartphones, Facebook and Twitter, more people are connecting online than ever before. That means everyone – from a small business to a stay-at-home mom – needs a web presence, according to Daniel Titus, website developer and graphic designer.

“More people are using websites and blogs to chronicle their lives. Pretty soon it will be the norm,” Titus said.

Titus has worked as an independent graphic and website designer in Albany for the past four years. His experience extends far beyond that however as graphic design has been an element of many jobs he’s held. Titus counts many Albany businesses as clients including this site, AlbanyCEO.com, Bishop Clean Care, Dougherty Blueprint, Jones Welding, Langstaff Marketing, MillerCoors, The Veranda and many more. Titus recently moved his company into offices at 315 N. Washington in the historic Sandy Bottom district in downtown Albany.

Why you need a web presence

According to Titus, an online presence is a valuable tool for presenting and sharing information directly with people interested in your business or your life. Companies large and small now consider a web presence as integral to their ongoing operations.

“My business is evenly split between companies creating their first web presence and those looking to update an existing site,” Titus explained.

Now individuals and families are sharing information online as well. Facebook and Twitter are well known social media. Increasingly families and individuals are creating personal websites.

“Families can post pictures for grandparents, share recipes and simply document their daily lives on a blog,” Titus explained.

Personal websites and blogs offer certain advantages over social media. For example, it can be difficult to delete a Facebook account and it’s possible for friends to post information to a page without the approval of the page owner.

“With your own website, you directly control the information that appears and you can take it down whenever you want,” Titus said.

Tips for creating a successful web presence

The most productive websites are those that are readily found by search engines. Search engine optimization is the process of improving the visibility of websites by taking into account how search engines work. It can entail embedding the right keywords in the website copy and increasing the links to and from the site.

“It’s also important to make sure the site looks good on mobile devices. People are increasingly using mobile devices to access the Internet rather than desktops,” Titus said.

Organizing a site for display on a mobile device requires a different mindset. Besides eliminating Flash, fixed-size tables and other complex elements it means designing a specific mobile experience.

Titus recently completed the new website for Lemonade Marketing Firm in Albany. The new site displays well on both desktops and phones with well-defined content categories, simple visuals and an engaging quality that fits the firm’s personality.
