Fast Copy, Inc., a digital copy service provider located in Albany, is one of the few businesses that are expanding operations in 2010.  The business is moving into space next door to its current facility, which will increase their size by roughly 50 percent.

“Our business is up for 2010,” said Randy Landers, president and general manager of Fast Copy.  “We’re adding a new staff member and new equipment so that we can provide services the people have been requesting.”

With its new equipment, Fast Copy will be able to offer laminating on large format jobs, such as banners.  The new staff member will help the company keep up with its layout business.

“We help with digital layouts for business cards, brochures and booklets,” Landers said. “For example, we’ll be producing a couple of high school football programs in the next few weeks.”

An up-and-down year
While business is up for the year, it has not been a steady month-to-month growth.  Instead, one month business will be up and the next month down.

“That’s mostly what I hear from customers – both good and bad.  While business isn’t back to where it was in 2008, it is still an improvement over last year,” Landers explained.

However, Fast Copy has operated as a member of the Albany community since 1994, which gives Landers a longer-term perspective.  He provides discounts to area churches and has donated his obsolete copiers to a local church.

“We’re part of the community and we support local sports teams and schools.  We also go the extra mile to provide great service because we love what we do,” Landers said.

About 35 percent of Fast Copy’s business comes to the store online via email or its website.  According to Landers, many of his online customers are from outside the area but have business in Albany.

“We have customers fly in from Israel, England and even Australia,” Landers explained.  “They send us their files and we deliver copies to them at their hotels.  We’re the guys they go to when they need it done right the first time. We also get jobs done faster than anyone else.”

Help not hinder
Landers believes government regulations should help not hinder small business.  Based on his experience, expanding a business can be trying when dealing with local and state agencies.

“Too often bureaucracy hurts business instead of encouraging growth,” Landers said.  “Even now I worry that regulations will cause issues with our planned expansion.”

However at this time Landers believes he has all necessary approvals in hand.  He has begun the process of hiring a new staff member and looks forward to operating a larger, enhanced Fast Copy later this year.
